Description: This workshop combines art history and art making. Learn about one of Maine's most famous artists and see images of the truly American art he created. Before he was a painter, he was known for his wood engravings. The first hour consists of a slide show and lecture about Homer's early career of producing drawings for wood engravings such as those published in Harper's Weekly. We'll discuss how his images reflected the times. The second hour will be a demonstration of print making with an opportunity for participants to create a print using EZ Soft Cut materials and carving tools. After the slide lecture and discussion, try your hand at basic print making.

Event Five
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
Open Studios at USM Gorham Campus
I’ve been experimenting with painting images from nature on birch rounds that I cut from locally sourced birch trees that fell in winter storms. I cut these into small slabs that I sand and then soak in wood preservative to prevent cracking as the wood dries. When the wood is dry I apply a base layer of white gesso, then glue paper to that for my preliminary sketch before I hand paint the image. A sawtooth hanger is attached to the back for easy hanging on your wall.
